Main differences between ISO/IEC 17020:2026 vs 2012

ISO/IEC 17020:2026 – modernizing the standard for inspection bodies

The new version ISO/IEC 17020:2026 does not change the fundamental principles of the standard, but introduces a significant modernization by aligning it with the ISO/IEC 17000 series, integrating the risk-based approach and adapting to the use of digital technologies in inspection processes.

Key changes in ISO/IEC 17020:2026

1. Structural changes and alignment with the ISO/IEC 17000 series

The standard has been reorganized and harmonized with other standards (ISO/IEC 17025, 17065, etc.). It introduces common CASCO elements and a clearer structure. As an impact, implementation and maintenance becomes easier for organizations with multiple accreditations and can be interpreted more uniformly globally.

2. New model of independence

Major simplification, with a focus on the actual management of impartiality risks, not just the formal structure. [iso.org]

3. Strong emphasis on risk-based thinking

The concept of risk & opportunity management appears, which replaces the traditional "preventive action" approach and covers operational processes and the validity of inspection results [ukas.com]

4. Stricter requirements on impartiality and confidentiality

The requirements are more explicit and more structured. Continuous risk identification is introduced: monitoring and clear documentation.

5. Competence – more dynamic approach

More focus on access to competence (not just internal staff), continuous monitoring. Less formal, more real assessment of competence.

6. Introducing data control and digitalization

NEW (very important) - Section dedicated to data, information and software systems control, which includes software validation, data security, use of digital technologies / AI.

7. Extensive equipment and technology requirements

It covers not only classic equipment, but also includes IT systems, remote inspections and digital technologies. It reflects the current reality (cloud, digital inspection).

8. Stricter control of suppliers and outsourcing

The requirements are more extensive, more detailed. It includes a supplier registry and supplier performance monitoring.

9. Better defined inspection methods

Stricter requirements for development, content, and validation. Especially for non-standard methods.

10. Complaints and appeals – simplified and transparent

Processes are becoming clearer and simpler. New requirement: they must now be publicly available.

11. Updated terminology and definitions

Terms updated, harmonized, some removed.Examples: entering terms like "customer", "item"

12. Change of title and broader scope

New title:

„Requirements for Bodies Performing Inspections”

Reflects: broader applicability and alignment with other standards.
